Active Listening

Hearing someone out instead of waiting for your turn

Usually hardest for: Extraversion high, Agreeableness low

The three phases

  1. Day 1–7

    Notice

Watch it happen. Nobody else has to know.

  2. Day 8–14

    Try it small

Do it where it costs you nothing.

  3. Day 15–28

    For real

The people and rooms that actually matter.

Three of the 28 days

One from each phase, in full. The rest arrive one a day in the app — the first 7 days free.

Day 1 about 10 min

Count your urges to jump in

Pick one conversation today that lasts at least ten minutes. While the other person talks, silently count every time you feel the pull to start speaking before they have finished. Change nothing else — just get the number, and write it down afterward.

Why it matters

You can't loosen a reflex you have never watched run. A number makes the invisible habit visible.

If it stalls

Keep the tally on your fingers or tap a note on your phone. Meetings and phone calls count too.

Afterwards you answer

  • What was your number?
  • When was the pull strongest — their pauses, their mistakes, or topics you know well?
  • How often did you actually jump in?
Day 8 about 5 min

Ask a stranger one real question

Ask someone serving you today — barista, cashier, taxi driver, canteen staff — one real question about their day: "What's been the strangest order today?" beats "All good?". Then stay completely quiet until they have fully finished answering, plus one extra breath, before you say anything back.

Why it matters

With someone you'll never see again, nothing is at stake — so all your attention can go to the new part: staying quiet past your usual jump-in point.

If it stalls

If no counter or checkout is on your route today, the person next to you in line or at the bus stop counts.

Afterwards you answer

  • Did they say more than you expected?
  • Where in their answer did you feel the pull to add your own comment?
Day 15 about 20 min

Leave your phone in another room tonight

Tonight, put your phone in another room and ask the person you live with about their day — or ring your closest friend from a chair, doing nothing else. Stay on their side of the conversation with questions until they have truly finished. Only then start on your day.

Why it matters

People can see where your attention is. With the phone gone they get all of it — and they notice, even if nobody says so.

If it stalls

Doing the dishes while they talk is the home version of the phone on the table — sit down for this one.

Afterwards you answer

  • What came out after the point where you would usually have taken over?
  • Did the conversation run longer than normal?

How progress is measured

Before you start you rate these situations from 1 to 5. After 28 days you rate them again, without ever seeing the first answers. The difference is the whole point of the app.

  • Listening to a problem without offering a solution
  • Asking a second and third question about someone else
  • Letting a silence sit instead of filling it
